    Protecting the rights of the people is the purpose of government according to the Declaration of Independence.

  • @CitizenInvestigator That's certainly not the only possible role of a governement, I think you would agree! And not everyone lives in the united states... I don't! ;)

    Communism is ready to sacrifice some of the personal freedom in order to equalize resources, an ideal that many do prefer to the rather vague "liberty". Anarchy does not "protect", but rather gives a greater liberty... I didn't want to start a debate, I'm just reacting to this biaised point of view!

  • @clarinini When you say, "not the only possible role," it sounds like you are speaking philosophically. I agree that people can differ philosophically. However, legally in the U.S. the government is instituted to secure the rights of men endowedby their Creator. The Declaration of Independence is law.

  • This political spectrum was invented by the John Birch society as anti communist propaganda. They lie about the true political spectrum to fool people who don't understand it, never seen it. Fascism isn't necessarily "far" right, Ayn Rand objectivism is. The far right wing doesn't even exist in modern society and on the far left everything is bad, so what's the use of this spectrum, which has no academic quality? IT'S PROPAGANDA

  • Political authoritarianism has nothing to do with left or right! There can be a right-wing dictatorship and a left-wing anarchy.

  • It is no accident that the far right has been associated with the leftist NAZI party.

    Millions of man hours have been invested in figuring out how to make Marxism palatable.

  • Thus, Fascists who rejected the Enlightenment and possibility of democracy, instead opting for an (admittedly largely falsified version of) traditional European values, are theoretically right-wing, more so than Libertarians or US style-Conservatives, who are right-wing simply because their own version of Liberal utopia happens to be 300 years old and slightly bigoted.

  • Now, about Fascism/National Socialism.

    The term right wing has been completely divorced from it's original meaning in this video. Right-wing meant adherence to tradition, and is necessarily 'anti-Republican' in that sense. Republics are perfect models dreamt up by idealists, and as such have no place in Classical Conservative theory, which holds organic power structures and prejudice as preferable to Liberal or Libertarian utopias.

  • So, the term Republic does not exclude Democracy. Sure, some Founders (note some) disliked Democracy because they wanted to the corrupt, elitist and aristocratic Roman 'Republic' (which wasn't radically different from the 'Empire' in the way Nazi Germany is from Weimar Germany) and because of the old anti-democratic wheeze about 'they'll still our land and slaves' but this was not universal. Jefferson called his party 'Democratic Republicans' for a reason.

  • 1) This Republic not a Democracy thing is shit. Sure, Res publica doesn't mean democracy. It means 'Commonwealth' or 'public affairs', and in fact doesn't imply any particular set of government relations, though usually in used the absence of a Monarch. Rome didn't actually call itself the Republic of Rome, officially speaking, it was the Senate and People of Rome (a name that was NEVER dropped).
