Whether he was real or not is immaterial. In the case of Jesus, the message is far more important than the messenger. Most Christians don't know what materialism is much less know that they are materialists. Not that it matters. If you think about God, goodness, helping, forgiving and so on then you're living what Jesus thought would be a good life. Even if you don't read the Bible. It makes more sense to live well and if Jesus helps fine - if not that's fine too.
