This is the Westside Church of Christ singing Hymns of praise to Jesus Christ our savior. We are located at
1705 Starview Dr
Salem, VA 24153

Our website http://www.westsidecofc-salem.com/

Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19).

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Colossians 3:16).

Why do some churches teach that it is wrong to use musical instruments to accompany our singing during Christian worship assemblies when the above verses don't precisely forbid it?

I think most will agree that God has specifically instructed (even "commanded") Christians to sing as part of the worship that He expects (even "demands"). Since He has not commanded nor even suggested to us to play musical instruments in worship, we can be absolutely certain that if we don't use musical instruments, then He will be pleased with Christians singing if their worship comes from the heart.

  • Not many know and understand that there is no instrumental music in worshipping God because they don't read for them selves and they do not attempt to comprehend scripture. But it is there in the bible. It is in there, the instructions for worshipping the one true God. Mechanical music can never be used for such and it indeed was never to be created with the intent to substitute or aid our true worship with which we were given at birth.

  • The church is not perfect because it is full of imperfect people, no matter how they look on Sunday morning. Worship is not about the people, it is about God, so I ask you - what does the bible say? and request that you act accordingly.

  • It's great to see other churches of christ posting hymns on youtube! Keep up the good work!

  • @jkduah Where in the New Testament, does it tell you, or allow you to use instruments?

A christian speaks where the Bible Speaks, and is silent where the Bible silent. It is no wonder there are so many diverse 'religions', when man decides to add here, and put something there, just because of mans interpretation of what he wants, not God.

  • Thanks for sharing this congregational singing. God bless you.

  • @jkduah To directly answer your question, the Bible does not explicitly forbid the use of instruments. However, I would ask a different question, why sing? What is the purpose?

Answer to that, Colossians 3:16, Ephesians 5:19. They say that the purpose of singing is to teach, admonish, that we speak to each other and make melody in our hearts. Can mechanical instruments do that? No.

So, just because something isn't wrong, doesn't make it right.

  • @jkduah Psalm 57v8, but only in BroGeo's re drafted version.

  • @BroGeorge1000 Whoever wrote Psalm 57v8 got that seriously wrong, then. They should have got you to write that Psalm instead, Brother George.

  • @jkduah Instructions for our worship isn't a list of 'do not's. A cake recipe doesn't say 'don't put in a cup of cement'. On a grocery list you don't list what NOT to buy.

All examples of worship in the New testament are 'they met to sing and teach'. We are told 'singing and making melody in your hearts'. Singing is the only thing commanded, and the only example we have.

If you want a chapter verse, there's this: Rev. 22: 18-19. John instructs us not to add to or take away from God's words.
