As they are "not making any more land" why would you want to lose what you got to the sea?
Some of the money spent on Coastal defense would be recouped overtime from taxes raised on property that is rented out on cliff edges. As these are extremely desirable places to holiday.
Also If said properties were saved, then the stamp duty collected on cliff properties would go through the roof when these properties are traded as they would now become valuable assets. Doh!
@vmgrd34 whilst It is true that coastal defences are not a one off cost, beach sand does a remarkable amount to protect the coast. The beach helps dissipate the energy held in the waves and provides a buffer zone between the sea and the cliffs in the event of a bad storm.
The local politicians seem to be blind to economics. You don't spend £1 to save 99p. Coastal defence is not a one off cost - it goes on forever.
As to the earlier comment, beach sand protects nothing, it only appears to protect where the costal zone is being built up. It certainly cannot protect an area that is sinking - coastal defences or not.
You might as well try to put a cork in volcano. It's tough, but that's how it is
Totally missed the point the beach sand has been sold and the government are asset stripping the country. The sand has gone that was protecting the cliffs.

I used to live in a coastal cottage about 50 yards from where the lady sat on the bench. Absolutely beautiful place to live.
