Our goal for this project was to design a closed loop oxygen delivery system to replace the oxygen blender currently used in hospitals. Oxygen blenders require nurses to manually adjust the oxygen levels being delivered to infants. The current system can allow the blood oxygen level of the patient to be out of a prescribed range up to 90% of the time. We feel this problem must be addressed because hypoxia can lead to developmental problems while hyperoxia has been linked to Retinopathy of Prematurity, or infantile blindness. To solve this problem, we have designed a device that can automatically adjust the level of oxygen delivered to the infant, creating a healthier environment for development. Our design includes a user interface, display screen, PID programmed microcontroller, and proportional valves. The device compares the oxygen value of the patients blood to a prescribed optimal value and decides how to adjust air and oxygen valves to achieve an appropriate concentration of oxygen delivered to the baby.

  • Hi,

we are an infant cpap team that would like to inquire about your oxygen air blender. We are also working on our senior design project, from uci, with engineering world health org.
