Machinima.

...It has been hailed as the art form of the 21st century.
...It is redefining music videos.
...And reinventing the videogame.
...It might be the future of cinema.

But there's a catch: if you make machinima, you might be breaking the law.

Or are you?

Find out at Stanford University. "Play Machinima Law" from April 24-25, 2009. This two-day conference will cover key issues associated with player-generated, computer animated cinema that is based on 3D game and virtual world environments. Speakers include machinima artists/players, legal experts, commercial game developers, theorists, and more. Topics include: game art, game hacking, open source and "modding," player/consumer-driven innovation, cultural/technology studies, fan culture, legal and business issues, transgressive play, game preservation, and notions of collaborative co-creation drawn from virtual worlds and online games. Films will be shown throughout the conference, including: Douglas Grayeton's Molotov Alva and His Search for the Creator and Joshua Diltz' Mercy of the Sea.

  • PS i realize there is sarcasm here...video is full of cliches...but them lawyers tend to be on the side of them cowboys...so it's hard to know whether the maker of this vid is wearing tights or sporting a holster, gun and branding iron ;)...this topic is no doubt screaming for more debate...hope this event will allow for that and not be a one-sided schoolin kinda thang ;)

  • this would have been a more "balanced video" (in terms of fairness to both sides of the argument), if robin hood had flown in at the last minute to rescue that guy from prosecution...wow i mean execution?!...and if opposing words to those "statements of BOO" had been displayed...DON'T BE AN OUTLAW! --> DON'T BE AN OPPRESSOR!...GET EDUCATED!-->GET ENLIGHTENED!...hopefully this event will not be as one-sided as the video...may robin hood attend as well?...or have the seats been patented for VIPs;)

  • hope the focus will also be on how ridiculous copyright, trademarks, patents (etc) have become...i write these words in the hope that they have not already been copyrighted...

  • Lol nice
