Jack Parsons (October 2, 1914 - June 17, 1952) at March Field in Southern California, August, 1941, for the first successful test of jet-assisted takeoff (JATO). Born Marvel Whiteside Parsons, Jack invented the solid fuel that got man to the moon and explored inner space as a student of Aleister Crowley's doctrine of Thelema. A cofounder of JPL, he died under mysterious circumstances in an explosion in his Pasadena laboratory in 1952. His widow, Cameron, was a poet and painter and underground movie star (Kenneth Anger's "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome").
