This is a video of British Prime Minister the Rt Hon Gordon Brown visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration & death camp, in Poland.
In a emotional visit, a visibly moved Prime Minsiter toured the camp with his wife Sarah at his side, where they laid a wreath in the memory of the lives lost.
The combined camps of Auschwitz & Birkenau saw the biggest loss of life in the Second World War, with hundreds of thousands of prisoners, the majority Jewish, killed in gas chambers between 1940 & 1945.
Karen Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said:
The Prime Minister has been a long standing supporter of Holocaust education & we are pleased that he is taking this opportunity to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau today & pay tribute to the millions who suffered at the hands of the Nazis. As Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown saw the value of, & provided funding for, the Holocaust Educational Trusts (HET) Lessons from Auschwitz Project which enables us to facilitate visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau for two students from every school in the UK. This funding, which was extended in 2008, has so far enabled over 7,000 students & teachers to be part of this invaluable experience. We hope that his visit will inspire other young people to join us on the Lessons from Auschwitz Project & become ambassadors in their own communities, raising awareness of the past and challenging prejudice & racism today.
