Colossus - The Forbin Project (1970) Part 5

Forbin(Eric Braeden) is the designer of an incredibly sophisticated computer that will run all of America's nuclear defenses. Shortly after being turned on, it detects the existence of Guardian, the Soviet counterpart, previously unknown to US Planners. Both computers insist that they be linked, and after taking safeguards to preserve confidential material, each side agrees to allow it. As soon as the link is established the two become a new Super computer and threaten the world with the immediate launch of nuclear weapons if they are detached. Colossus begins to give it's plans for the management of the world under it's guidance. Forbin and the other scientists(Susan Clark, Gordon Pinsent, William Schallert and Leonid Rostoff) form a technological resistance to Colossus which must operate underground.

Never, but never, argue with a computer which has nuclear weapons under its control...

Films are better without lots of action...too many films of today rely on action and CGI. That doesn't make them very thought-provoking and films such as Colossus have a very important message to us all.

i wonder what a similar film made today would be like: with internet communication the plot of this film would be resolved in half the time.

First, Watson wins on Jeopardy. That should be enough to tell you he's ready to be the next Colossus. Think of all the cool stuff He can do right now: manage our Banks, falsely boost our economy by creating jobs, force Corporations into Bankruptcy and allow for takeover, educate our kids by teaching them only what THEY want them to know. And then when Watson DOES take over, ...WATCH OUT!!

Memo to future computer designers: When you come up with AI don't give it physical access to anythng but a moniter. P.S. Forbin and his Russian counterpart really, realy dumb. The damn things didn't run for 24 hours before taking over.
