One must also consider that in this time period it really would be scary to be a stunning beauty. It seems reasonable that rather than being obsessed with her beauty Clara is frightened by it's implications. Women were often used as little more than merchandise to raise the fortunes of men. If she were to be raped she would be considered tainted goods. If one looks at how the men in this movie leer at Clara it is not to surprising that she is terrified by the world.

whomever played Iris---annoyed the crap out of me. The acting was very poor. May be because the actress herself is pretty unattractive or just plain ugly

the actress playing the mother looks the same as she did in "Grease"...which was about 30 years ago!!!!! Not that she looks particuarly young, but more that she just hasn't aged. She looked older than most of the cast then and looks younger than she must be now.

that painter was good hearted but he made all of his subjects ugly and wretched. Ugh!
