RAYNHAM — A medical chopper thundered above as Deb Korotsky leaned over the stretcher carrying her unconscious daughter.
She had just seconds to say goodbye — so she kissed her Jillian on the forehead.
There was no time to cry.
It had been 15 minutes since the Honda Pilot hit the teenager, hurtling her over the SUV's roof, and she lay immobilized for the emergency flight to Children's Hospital in Boston.
Korotsky had seen the horror unfold from her front door.
Now, she waited in a nearby supermarket parking lot, which would be the landing zone for the MedFlight helicopter.
Her husband, Steve, had come from work, and the stunned parents watched — standing silent and side-by-side — as rescue crews converged on their daughter.
The helicopter touched down, a nurse emerged, and in minutes Raynham paramedics shuttled Jillian from the ambulance.
As they did, her father caught a glimpse of Jillian, buried in a yellow nylon blanket, and lost his breath. Her face had turned ashen, and a raw, pink bulge had formed on her forehead, just beneath her straw-colored hair.
"Her face — it didn't look like Jill," Steve said.
Seconds later, they slid her into the helicopter, promised to call with updates, revved the rotors and closed the doors.
People ran clear, police redirected traffic, sand swirled — everything, everybody, seemed to be moving.
Except for Deb and Steve Korotsky, who stared skyward until the machine carrying their child faded into the horizon.
