Germanna Dean of Nursing Mary Gilkey talks about her sister's suicide and her daughter's depression during a Germanna Center for Workforce & Community Education panel discussion. Gilkey will teach a 12-hour class on Mental Health First Aid, from 8 am to 3 pm Oct. 22 and 29, 2011. Registration is open till this Friday, Oct. 14. Please call 540/891-0312.
You may save a life. The course is for lay people. If you know a friend or co-worker is depressed, tell someone. Help them by helping them get help.
A thoughtless schoolmate told Gilkey's daughter, "You're so depressed, looking at you, I want to kill myself." Gilkey asks teens and college students not to keep secrets when friends say, "I'm so depressed, I want to die." Gilkey: "You don't give up. You try to keep supporting.... Hold your family close. Let them know you love them. Don't give up on them."
