This surgery is a Baxter's nerve release with plantarfasciectomy for chronic heel pain. This patient did not respond to several months of conservative care and decided to undergo surgery for the affected area. The surgery has about 85% success rates according to original studies. Diagnosis of Baxter's nerve entrapment is based on clinical findings, diagnostic injections and MRI findings. Post-operative course is full weight-bearing in a cast boot for 5 to 6 weeks. Fully recovery is about 12 weeks.

  • Hey Dr. DeHeer,

Would it be prudent to use cautery on the fascia layer to visualize the muscle belly underneath, instead of using a hemostat and metz, or is it preference of the surgeon?

  • @bergerbuns327 The fascia will not bleed, you need to use cautery for the sub cutaneous tissue. It is important when cutting the plantar fascia not to get into the underlying muscles. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

    Patrick A. DeHeer, DPM
