WTWW Lebanon, TN. Shortwave station broadcasting on 5755mHz.
Test transmission - 23/Jan/2010 - 11:10pm EST (24/Jan/2010 - 4:10 UTC)

Radio: My beloved 1939 RCA Victor T-80

Sorry about the skewed picture and the lack of white balance. This was recorded live from the radio during the broadcast. The two "drop outs" in the sound near the end of the clip is the radio transmission cutting out and not from the recording.

The radio had been professionally refurbished inside, but the cabinet was "refinished" to less-than-spectacular results.

  • Thanks for recording this! I had trouble getting this to recieve on my eciever and i live in TN,so i must be in the skip zone to properly tune in.Good That George McClintock called in on the program to inform about the leak in the water cooling system of the 100 kw transmitter.73's,Brainy

  • @brainman214

No problem. The reception was amazingly clear and strong for me. It was pegging my "Magic Eye" and the fading I usually experience on SW signals was almost negligible.

Do you know if the regular broadcasts for WTWW will have the same programming as the test broadcasts, or will the format change when it goes Live?

    73's to you and yours!

  • Absolutely beautiful radio. I've never heard of WTWW, but if someone is tuning in from Maine, there's a good chance I can pick it up. I just did search and they have a video of their transmitter on youtube under the title "wtww shortwave station transmitter". Great vid.

  • @DougCantDance Thanks kindly! I have it on good authority that the radio is a stellar performer, even with the makeshift antenna I currently have on it.

I made a video showcasing my radio and posted it to YouTube today. Check it out if you're interested.

  • Very nice, It reminds me of the days of listening to the old WRNO Worldwide. I will have to try getting it here in Texas. BTW what kinds of programming WTWW will be running?

  • I don't know. They haven't said. This was the first time I had tuned in to one of their broadcasts. I was sweeping the SW dial looking for something entertaining, and I landed on the broadcast. My dial claims it's around the 5755mHz mark, but I tried tuning in my Sony portable to the station, and I couldn't find it. I'm sure there'll be more test broadcasts by them. I think 9480mHz is the other frequency they currently utilize, so you can check there as well.

  • Great music in this video!I have a lot of these on compilation CD's for posterity and for my love of music which may not be part of WTWW on the first day it launches which should be next week.Keep Our Fingers Crossed.Brainy

  • PT:As soon as George returns from the HFCC conference,i'm told, programming should start,i assum that Ted Randall will be live on the first day it happens since he also is heard over WBCQ and WRMI i think.73's,Brainy

  • This is the station which used to operate as KAIJ in Dallas, moved to Lebanon(Middle)TEnnessee last year.I do hope you enjoy listening as it is Tennessee's Third SW Station,as we already have WWCR and WWRB both in Nashville.Brainy

  • Ya, you definitely want to have a ground :-)

With my Magnavox that I restored, I installed a new 3 prong cord, so the chassis is already grounded.

  • The antenna I'm using is just a simple wire I've strung around the ceiling of the room. I have yet to connect the radio to a proper ground.

As for the radio itself, it was my dad's uncle's radio he received in the 1950s. The person who refurbished it was impressed with the sensitivity. It pulled in stations his other "good" rigs had trouble receiving.

I'll do a video entry for the radio and go into greater detail with it.
