I abhore unneccesary exertion.

@adlagn suffering is optional...pain inevitable!

Having just finished my first Ironman (Canada), I can assure you there is a degree of suffering. You can train your butt off, but you can't control the weather, how you're going to feel on race day, etc.. But, you value things in life just a little bit more when you have put in that kind of effort. And as the saying goes, "pain is temporary pride is forever"...

And I complain after 40 min of mild running... hehehe

That looks easy! Just Joking, If you could just complete one of those you could brag to your family and friends!

sometimes you must suffer to get to the greatest things in life. Is having a baby sadistic for a woman or is it one of the most beautiful things on earth? Same for Ironman, I dream everyday about the day I will do my first IM. I have done Oly's and suffered, but at the end of an IM it is the difference from being in the NFL and have been to the super bowl. Few play in the NFL even fewer go to the super bowl. Few do Triathlon even fewer do IM.

Actually, I think maybe what Charlie means is that its not sadistic to want to do the race. There are plenty of amazing reasons to do it that go far beyond simply wanting to go through the experience, and maybe ABC should say so. But, I think they do actually. The people who do the Ironman events around the world are amazing people. Nothing sick about 'em.

Charlie perhaps you should stick to Poker!

Swim 2+ miles in the Pacific ocean currents, bike 112 into a headwind and run a complete marathon on the volcanic Hawaiian terrain and see what it's like..
walk the walk CharlieMetalMan, then let's if you can even even spell the word sadism when you're done.
