@TrollingForYou Two things. Firstly, the accident involved quite a fair bit of high speed sliding on the tarmac, then grass. Secondly, modern racing leathers to European standards also contain inner 'armour' that is designed to spread the force of an impact around the body and reduce the chance of injury.

The commentator doesn't say it absorbed all the impact, just that it helped reduce how much punishment he took.
