Muhammed, (ca. 570 Mecca -- June 8, 632 Medina),[6] is the central human figure of the religion of Islam and is regarded by Muslims as the messenger and prophet of God (Arabic: الله‎ Allāh), the last and the greatest in a series of prophets of Islam. Muslims consider him the restorer of the uncorrupted original monotheistic faith (islām) of Adam, Abraham, Moses, Noah and other prophets of Islam.[7][8][9] He was also active as a diplomat, merchant, philosopher, orator, legislator, reformer, military general, and, according to Muslim belief, an agent of divine action.[10]

Born in 570 CE in the Arabian city of Mecca,[11] he was orphaned at a young age and was brought up under the care of his uncle. He later worked mostly as a merchant, and was first married by age 26. Discontented with life in Mecca, he retreated to a cave in the surrounding mountains for meditation and reflection. According to Islamic beliefs it was here, at age 40, in the month of Ramadan, where he received his first revelation from God. Three years after this event Muhammad started preaching these revelations publicly, proclaiming that "God is One", that complete "surrender" to Him (lit. islām) is the only way (dīn)[12] acceptable to God, and that he himself was a prophet and messenger of God, in the same vein as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and other prophets in Islam.[13][14][9]

Muhammad gained few followers early on, and was met with hostility from some tribes of Mecca; he was treated harshly and so were his followers. To escape persecution Muhammad and his followers migrated to Medina (then known as Yathrib) in the year 622. This event, the Hijra, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Medina Muhammad managed to unite the conflicting tribes, and after eight years of fighting with the Meccan tribes, his followers, who by then had grown to ten thousand, conquered Mecca. In 632 a few months after returning to Medina from his Farewell pilgrimage, Muhammad fell ill and died. By the time of his death most of the Arabian Peninsula had converted to Islam.[15]

The revelations (or Ayats, lit. "Signs of God"), which Muhammad reported receiving until his death, form the verses of the Qur'an, regarded by Muslims as the "word of God", around which his religion is based. Besides the Qur'an, Muhammad's life (sira) and traditions (sunnah) are also upheld by Muslims. They discuss Muhammad and other prophets of Islam with reverence, adding the phrase peace be upon him whenever their names are mentioned.[16] While conceptions of Muhammad in medieval Christendom and premodern times were largely negative, appraisals in modern times have been far less so.[14][17] Besides this, his life and deeds have been debated by followers and opponents over the centuries.[18]

I like what the Abyssinian king said. That even if Christian and Muslim beliefs were different..they came from the same source. I am Christian and I pray for peace with my Muslim brothers. May we all be embraced by the one True God equally even if our journeys there are different. Please ignore all the hateful comments. Our God teaches Love and that is all you should remember.

@def2369 absolutely, not only myself but quite a few do so here in my country (Bangladesh)...there are many instances where people have taken a stand...thing is do you want to dig deep to find out...it is mentioned in the Qur'An a lot of times that along with faith in the One True God, RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PIOUSNESS are key for every believer...on that note a very quick question: How many muslim countries are "3RD WORLD" countries?

@hnchowdhury Tell me, do you protest in the streets against radical muslims? Do you protest against a nation for the bad works from just a few? Do you blame the suicide bombings on those muslims or who you think is your enemy?

@def2369 (continued) Same applies with Islam...it is a Guidance from God (Allah) to mankind and it is on each individual as to how they use the teachings and improve on their own morals to look after their own lives and also those around them and not to forget the Afterlife...May we all find peace in our lives by Allah's Will...and may you find yours wherever you are my dear friend...

@def2369 its like this...if you have a doctor, who for some reason prescribes drugs for his patients which are not required but are merely for financial benefits of them coming back to him/her again from the 'side-effects' and also from the financial benefits of purchasing those drugs to give him/her business...this is unjust but does the blame lie on Medical Practice or on the morals of the doctor?...same applies with Islam...

@def2369 just read your comments...I am a muslim...I honestly commend your honesty and quite frankly what you've mentioned is very very true...very seldom do us muslims stand up against fellow muslims who are radical and unjust and kill innocent harmless civilians...ill quote you out n explain one thing tho..."Truly show the world that you don't preach lies when saying islam is about peace"...you cant conjure up an impression on Islam based on what muslims are doing...(continued)

I want to see the muslims in America, Spain, England, and every other part of the world protest against this so-called holy war. If there really are good muslims then stand up and don't be scared. You know I would have respect to the muslims if the so-called good muslims would start protesting against the radical muslims for fighting the world. I have never once heard of a muslim fighting against war. The closest thing I have heard is that when a suicide bomber hits their own muslim family the rest of the world is blamed for the bombers actions. Don't let them deceive you in their hidden roles of supporting the war muslims started. Don't let your kids be deceived by this cartoon either.
