Our Representative Kelum Gunatilake said the 59th Division crossed the Nanthikadal Estuary this morning and breached the massive LTTE earth bund. The 12th Sri Lanka Infantry Force, the 11th Gemunu Watch and the 1st Armoured Corps assisted. The operation was launched under the supervision of Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka. Commander of the 55th Division Brig. Prasanna De Silva was tasked with the operation. Commander of the 593rd Brigade Lt. Col. Sujeeva Senarath Yapa assisted him. The width of the Nanthikadal Lagoon near the Estuary is 280 metres. The operation was successful due to the guidance of the Army Commander coupled with the experience of the officers.
The troops did not permit the LTTE to enter the Mullaitivu area as they had stepped up security. The LTTE was firing shells parallel to the earth flouting international military laws. They are using a Jordanian ship which was seized sometime ago. It is reported that several LTTE leaders had frequested the area a few days ago.seized sometime ago.
