No, in fact, we often use "guy" to say something about him. This doesn't mean to belittle anybody, neither do we play prunk on him. Even, we show our affection for the person we referred to. So, I bet it's OK with anybody to use it, except for ladies, because we use young lady or girl to show our respect. Yea, time has changed our common language used in our daily conversation. Please, excuse for the usage of "guy".
If my memory serves well, this must be a well-known popular Japanese song prevailing in Taiwan almost over sixty years ago. Whenever you walked along the streets, you could hear a lot of people humming it. Especially, the lyrics of this song is descripting a guy who left his hometown for a while and very much worried about his girlfriend waiting for his returning home to get married with her. The melody is quite melancholy but very magnetic. Almost anyone likes to imagine himself as the guy.

I cried and cried, I could not bear crying.
because of sorrow of parting with that girl, Mountain crows were also crying,
at the village edge of Jizo-statue with Ipponsugi (only one japanese cedar)
I called, I called, I tried calling her in the moonlight secretly.
She is waiting for my backing intently without marrying anyone.
How old is her now? She should have been already 20 years old.
