This video is a brief introduction to meme theory for more information see Dawkins, The Selfish Gene (chapter 11) and Blackmore's, the Meme Machine.

P.S. Yes, I know it's spelt "Response"

  • Listen to that person below me wax poetic about you and your video. Sheesh. Lady, go find a hobby and root for somebody important. LordImo...First off, your delivery is quite poor. You stutter about aimlessly while injecting semi-big words that sound paraphrased from real literature. Second off, your topic is irrelevant, as memes used to categorize certain aspects of life is needless when you consider life as a whole. Take it for what it is, no need to attempt to dismantle it piece by piece.

  • So asides from critising me directly the only real point you appear to have made is "take life as a whole". While I agree that reductionist approaches sometimes oversimplify these things, Psychology is constantly trying to form useful models of human behaviour in an attempt to try to develop hypothesis, which can be used in an attempt to understand social and psychological dynamics. Your criticism is about as valid as saying 'atomic theory is wrong', "consider life as a whole".

  • Right, well the use in studying it is.... what exactly? To make an attempt to modify human behavior to the point of... what exactly? Social and psychological dynamics? What? You are suggesting that self actualization cannot occur on it's own without someone dreaming up standardized methods and reasons for every thought? The time you spent making the video cannot come back... to gain and comprehend knowledge that will be lost when you meet your demise... with no benefit to anyone.

  • You seem to be missing the point somewhat. You may as well be asking the question, why study sociology, psychology, historical theology or anthropology at all.

Personally, (For my masters next year hopefully) I intend to model the concept of meme-gene co-evolution in computational form. To try and see whether it will shed some light on the development of language. IE Organisms that can communicate more effectively horizontally will be favoured genetic selection, etc etc

  • I liked it. Well done. Ive read Richard Dawkins, Richardson and Boyd, listened to Dan Dennet and Suzan Blackmore. You seam to have explained the subject of memes rather well.

Id like to go one step further and work on choosing- memes for overall health: mental, physical and social.

There is a strange feeling of tinkering with the stuff of life (with genes) and now of thought with memes.

Good job. Thank you for creating and posting it.

  • Great video - very good intro into Memetheory. I've been looking at Meme theory for a bit lately and especially how I could use it in Marketing strategies. I'm also interested in the power of cities, especially mega-cities like NY, London, Tokyo and their effect on the spread and survival of memes. Any information or suggested video/reading there?

BTW keep on coming with your video's - very interesting!!!

  • Well good luck on in your *MASTERS YEAR* debating semantics, as you've clearly lost sight of the big picture. The further you get down the maze of micro-analyzation, the less likely we all will see you come up with anything useful. Cheers!

  • Fascinating... the concept lends itself to everything in the world. You've managed to describe things that I've thought about and felt... but could not come up with the words to describe. Your delivery is superior, and your appearance is amazing... <3 wow...
