Keiko Abe
Born 1937 in Japan
PRISM was born as a two-mallet marimba solo and, like many of Abe's compositions, grew from an improvisation. A prism is a solid figure whose ends are parallel, polygonal and equal in size and shape. Like its namesake, this composition begins much as it ends. A prism also refracts and disperses light and Abe's melodic lines reflect this in the body of the composition. Prism has since been arranged by Abe for marimba duet, marimba and percussion ensemble and marimba and orchestra.

  • Pretty cool man, I like the musicality. I think it's cool that you are doing your own thing with it, but at the same time Keiko wrote it and had a specific sound in mind. I think that you need to check out the way she plays it (it's on one obscure cd of hers).

  • Very well said. I've often played music much faster than intended to see what effect it would have on melodic perceptions. Mainly on guitar, when I've sped up melodies I see harmonic implications that would otherwise be to sparse in their relations to make sense. I love jazz, so usually its a jazz piece, but it can happen with these as well. After all, speed is only the allotment of time between events.

  • actually i prefer it this way!and for the speed catchers, if you can play it musically in this tempo you can also play it a lot faster then keikos written or perfomance

  • great tone for all ranges

    what mallets are you using?

  • good job!i like it more slower than faster.

  • sweet.

  • i like it

  • It works tho :)

  • This is phenomenally slower than what is written or performed by Keiko.

  • this is awesome
