@7hom Actually Norton says that. The irony is intentional. Tyler Durden is created by the narrator (Norton's character). While the narrator "self destructs", every day he's in a worse physical state and starts loosing teeth, Tyler Durden's looks keep improving and he becomes more ripped like a calvinkleinesque model.

I think it's more like what Marx said about religion being the opium of the people. It's not that it does anything it just makes people feel better. So it is with self improvement. It just makes people feel good thinking they've done something for themselves. In reality very little about them has changed in any way that is remarkable or significant.
