Our libraries are under threat. The lyrics of this song are closely based on the ideas, words and phrases said to me by a class of 30 eight year-old children. We should listen to what they say. Written by Maria Tolly in 2010.
I guess it depends where you live. Here in Bush Hill Park - Enfield - my library (very small) is always full of kids - they do their homework here and get loads of books out. It's a genuine community meeting place.
The problem is most people have stopped using the libraries. Half as many books issued than 10 years ago. Only 1 in 6 even have a ticket these days.
This song is by kids but there are hardly any kids ever in my library. Most users are retired folk.
The best way to show popular support for libraries is to use them!
