Do funny beer ads contribute to our culture of drinking? Do ads for discounted liquor encourage binge drinking? These are some of the questions being considered by the Law Commission as it looks at revamping the country's liquor laws and it's these questions The AD Show will be canvassing this week.
From those who want all liquor ads banned to those who think our current regulations go far enough, The AD Show will look at the issues that swirl around this controversial topic. On the panel with host Hazel Philips will be Dr Harold Coop from the Group Against Liqour Advertising (GALA), ALAC Chief Executive Gerard Vaughan and Professor Glen Wigg of the Foundation for Advertising Research (FFAR).
It looks set to be an interesting debate. GALA wants all liquor advertising banned and alcohol sponsorships phased out. But FFAR claims it has research to show alcohol consumption goes up when alcohol advertising decreases.
With nearly $34 million spent on alcohol advertising in New Zealand annually any changes to the liquor advertising regulations could have far reaching consequences for the advertising industry.
