At Home Semiconductor Fabrication: Part 1

This is the first in a series of videos about home semiconductor fabrication. The long term goal is to make a thin film solar cell, using commonly available household items. The vacuum pump in this system is from Harbor Freight and retails for about $150 dollars. This pump can reach 29 inches of vacuum or about 1 to 25 Torr.

  • @DDDarray I don't think the Vacuum pressure is low enough to generate hard x-rays. The Vac is around 10 Torr, I think you need to be close to 10^-3 for X-rays. I have a Geiger Counter perhaps I wil run a check in the next video.

  • Neat stuff. Have you gotten x-rays yet? I did a similar experiment in high school, using a long glass tube, and drove it with a small Van De Graaf generator, and the inside of the glass started to glow green near one of the electrodes. I had no way of measuring the operating voltage.
