Oh my goodness....depressing? Really?

I never thought of it that way I guess. A single woman trying to make it with her son: she found an apartment, got a job, and made friends. And if I remember correctly, even had a date or two. So....I'm not seeing where being depressed falls into it.

I loved the show and had the theme in my head for the last few days so I looked this up. I'm glad I did and love Linda Lavin.

@9696286 I agree with all that you say but the underlying tone is dark she's a waitress in a diner with a harsh boss, lives in what looks like a shoebox drives a shitbox and seems to be worried about every red cent she has or hasn't got. not to mention it sounds like she married the wrong guy hence "going through life w/ blinders on it's tough to see, I HAD to get up come out from under and look for me....it all reads dark to me.

The show is nothing but bad memories for me too. I want to sleep or die when I see this opening and hear the theme. Cant put my finger on it, its just a bad vibe around this show. I guess Im not alone reading the comments.

One of my favorite shows! Depressing? No way. Famine, genocide and war is depressing. "Alice" was uplifting like "Chico and the Man", "Welcome Back Kotter", and "All In The Family". "Good Times" when we all watched the same thing on TV and kids were free to play outside, not on the internet. These were my "good ole' days!"

This show was so depressing, what a sad existance this woman had. It was so sad. And the fact that she sings the theme song is even more depressing.

Ok if any of you want to see depressing..this show was based off of the Martin Scorcesse film called "Alice Doesn't live here Anymore" rent it..Vic Tayback is actually in the film as Mel and Flo is also in it tho not played by Polly Holliday

depressing no way. I would not worked for mel but they all got along like family and helped each other out. not like that today in real life. I seen all of the shows and i was depressed when it went off the air. how about some reruns . ok.
