Irish Music Session in Clonmel

From Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Clonmel 2004, a session of reels led by the well-known McKeown family from Dublin. Uilleann piper Gabriel McKeown and his wife Mary (then on piano) were members of the Pipers' Club Céilí Band who were the All-Ireland champions in 1975 and 1976.

What I fail to understand is why Irish trad musicians (and, trust me, I have been one for many a year) turn so bloody po-faced once a camera has been trained on them, totally dampening the beauty of the music being played.

That said, Gabe McKeown was always a serious chap: I remember the 1974 Listowel Fleadh when we we mere mortals shared the company of two of the finest uilleann pipers of any generation: Gabe and Davey Spillane. Davey just seemed to be *enjoying* it more

@minoune86 You aren't stupid. It is a crutch really, a way of keeping the flute steady and your armbiture (sp?) solid and consistent on the keyless Irish flute. You see, on those flutes there quite often are no little thumb holder thingies like on a band or concert flute. They are a straight tube with VERY w i d e set holes. They are set wide like bagpipes or a low D whistle, and have little in the way of keys. You fingers do all the work playing and holding the instrument.
