My name is Maher Louis and I'm going to use AutoDesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 to show you that it's very easy to "import an image and surface" from Google Earth. I'll then show you how to create an Exaggerated Surface Style to better view a surface. Data from Google Earth is not quite exact because the accuracy depends on how close you view your site. The further you view & import a site from Google Earth, the less accurate the Horizontal Location and Surface Elevation. WARNING: Only use images and surfaces from Google Earth to produce conceptual/preliminary drawings, never for final engineering drawings.

  • @Bzar500 Yes he does it at 3:50. If you are using a version with no text menu and only ribbon is available you have to select the surface, then in the ribbon green [contextual] tab "Tin Surface: surfaceName" you go to the group called "Surface tools" and then press the button that reads "Drape image"; alternatively [surface selected] you can type the "AECCDRAPEIMAGE" command. When you're ready to see the end result [right click>Object viewer] make sure you select "Realistic" visual style.

  • Thanks Maher for the demo, you didn't explain how did you bring google earth "colorful" image in to the Civil 3D, jost you said saved in your desktop, would you please explain. i tried but it was flat "colorful" image in Civil 3D 2009 and i couldn't use it with surface created with google earth. thanks,

  • What is the best google earth service service to use? I work for a water utility, how can I overlay water distribution layouts and repairs using autocad civil 3D 2011 with google earth or some other maping service?

    Thanks for the demo.

  • u're too kind.
