I enjoyed it when he said he hated the public, that he would never try to educate the public, and was trying for the sake of one intelligent person in the audience. Then you know he was never thinking THIS film would be his memoirs! However, I forgive him for detesting me and Puccini because it's nice to have his honest raptures about Wagner (saying he gave up trying to compose because of what he recognized listening to Wagner) and Beethoven (saying "What a tragedy, what a miracle.)

I'm a little confused whether this is set in 1954 or 1955. We are led to believe it is 1954 at the end when everyone toasts the new year of 1955. But Toscanini was in Italy from June 1954 and didn't return to New York until February 1955 to "die in exile".
Barry Jackson is a veteran British actor, and I too found the accent puzzling. It's more central European than Italian.
Otherwise, I enjoyed this film and was really drawn into what must have been wonderfully cozy evenings at Riverdale.

Is this guy supposed to have an Italian accent? Also, the reason that Toscanini found the NBC Symphony at such a high level is because Pierre Monteux had prepared them before his arrival! (Not to take anything away from AT)
