How the fuck did scientists find this information?

I'll try to answer this as simply as possible. The mRNA transcribed from the DNA will always have corresponding codons, with U replacing T. The tRNA will have the anti codon to the mRNA, so essentially the same as the original DNA given that U replaces the T's. So;

Original DNA: AAT

mRna: UUA

tRNA: AAU

DNA: 5'AAT3'

mRNA:3'UUA5'

tRNA: 5'AAU3'

By convention, always write with a 5' to 3' directionality. Therefore the mRNA complement would be written as AUU (5' to 3')
