  • He is lovely to listen to...

  • His top notes were incredible. How sad he died at 38 in such terrible circumstances. Barely 5 ft tall, one conductor said to him: 'A pity you are not small', to which Schmidt replied: 'But I am small!', and the conductor said: 'No, you're too small!" - he meant for a career on the operatic stage. But Schmidt built a career singing opera on the radio, and in his films and records. Then the Nazis came.

Celebrate his big, brave heart and wonderful voice!

  • wonderful HIGH dflat at the end. My Tenor hero. I accomplish a career as lyric Tenor myself. I m a high lyric Tenor up to High F and Fsharp above Top C.

  • How could not one be touch by such a passionate voice. his voice is thrilling.

  • Ich bin auch der Meinung, schade dass man nichts mehr von ihm hat. Hatte eine LP vor ca. 20 Jahren, darauf war ds Ave Maria. Hier ist es nicht zu finden, suche einen Tip.

  • oooouch!!

    u should c me Z4

  • Wonderful voice. Today, his art is bound with his tragedy. By the way, notice how he is above the girl on a staircase... the solution for the height difference.

  • Might I join --without intruding -- in your beautiful sentiment..

  • I have spent some time in Romania, Brasov, Cinsor (My favourite village, but don't tell too many people) and Fagaras. I know the people have to get on with their lives, but I have never heard tell of Josephy Schmidt as Romanian. I had only one memory of him and that was the peculiar if brilliant way he sang A Star Falls From Heaven, which I remember from my earliest years. Tell us something about his Romanian origins, please!

  • Beautiful voice he has. And a sad fate. He combined Austria-Hungary, Viennese grandeur, Italian dramaticity, European pessimism (Shoah, war), multiethnicism (Czernowitz) all in one person. A great artist. Requiescat in pace.
