"Daisy Bell" was composed by Harry Dacre in 1892. In 1961, the IBM 7094 became the first computer to sing, singing the song Daisy Bell. Vocals were programmed by John Kelly and Carol Lockbaum and the accompaniment was programmed by Max Mathews. This performance was the inspiration for a similar scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do
I'm half crazy all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage
I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

HAL stands for Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer. Its been stated numerous times. The IBM thing is a coincidence.

Many of you say it's the first VOCALOID, but it's actually an ancestor to VOCALOID

Although the plates clearly state "SAL 9000", it is never stated what the letter S stands for and therefore it is unclear whether "SAL" is just a nickname or an acronym similar to "HAL". "SAL" could also begin with an S to represent sister of "HAL".

Me too. :) And I think I know why.
Because here's a computer with the capacity for speech, unofficially ushering in the 21st century...and it's singing a cute sing that was written when cylindrical records were the brand new technology (1892). The parallel is quite beautiful.

The author of 2001: A Space Oddessy WAS in attendance for the original demonstration that this was showcased at, and that was what inspired the famous shutdown scene, but he swears that he didn't realize HAL was a one-letter shift from IBM when he created the character. He probably WAS subconsciously referencing IBM, but the name wasn't intended as such.
