Ashton: EU nearing decisions on own diplomatic service

More talks on the European Union's own diplomatic service, known as the External Action Service, will be held during the coming weeks, says Catherine Ashton, EU High Representive, at a press conference in Cordoba, Spain, on Saturday as EU foreign ministers met.

Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative and EC Vice President and the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Member States have met yesterday and today in Córdoba where they have been welcome by Miguel Ángel Moratinos, Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The Ministers discussed topics of great political significance, particularly the role of the European Union in the Middle East and the prospects for the Peace Process and our relations with the great emerging actors in the international arena, as well as with the Western Balkans. The Ministers also spent part of the discussions on the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty and the new European Union Common Foreign and Security Policy instruments, in particular the European External Action Service.

The Gymnich takes its name from the German castle in which the first meeting of this kind was held in 1974, during the German Presidency of the Council. It is held every six months. This time, both the chosen location Palacio de Viana, in the historic town of Córdoba and the limited number of topics are meant to promote the spirit of European family which has always characterised these meetings. The main idea of this Gymnich, which for the first time will be attended by Catherine Ashton, is that the exchange of ideas will allow the High Representative to design and implement genuine European Union foreign policy strategies.

Am I right in thinking that the EU diplomatic service are a service dedicated to issues outside of Europe?

exactly. problem is though that not all EU member states agree on who would be in charge: the EU commission, as executive body? or the member state running the EU embassy? or the EU Foreign Ministers group?

hahaha....well what would you suggest Wolfgang? I didn`t vote for one Europe. I was quite happy doing my thing. It is here and employs only God knows how many.

All of Europe put money in the pot. It seems that th EU is a collective that intends to sort out the problems of the World while being proud of ones Country is a sin. Maybe I am crazy...my phychiatrist assured me I am not though. He told me I have a very high emotional intelligence...so there!! hahaha

To be perfectly honest I know very little of what happens in the European Parliament. Where would I find information that...A) Gives me it`s construction. B) Gives me it`s mission statement etc etc??
