The WITR Radio Piano Smash Contest (1967)

Here's a film shot in 16mm during my college radio years. A craze at the time were contests to see how fast one could destroy an old piano and push the pieces thru a 9" hole. My "NightLife" radio show was up to the challenge!
With a lot of work from a lot of people, we put together a big RIT event held just outside of Rochester, NY at the Greece Towne Mall. It became a week-long event with pumpkin carving, singing groups and ending the week with the Piano Smash Contest on my radio show and an appearance by well-known campus personality, Dr. Ludwig VonLiederkranz (World's Foremost Authority).
It was great fun back then and the school & campus radio station had great exposure. Along with the film, I have a little bit of audio from that day as well. The film concludes with a copy of an original poster from the event, a photo of yours truly taken around that time at the station, and one last look at my WITR buddies. I hope you enjoy this brief look back in time.

Wilmorite may decide to demolish the old Sibley´s department store in 2009 to make room for smaller stores. It seems that we are always losing remnants of our past in Rochester and the suburbs. The Mall at Greece Ridge will never be Eastview Mall and this expansion won´t do much. People are already afraid to shop there because of the fights earlier this year.
