1. When I've done my work of day, And I row my boat away, Doon the waters o' Loch Tay, As the evening light is fading, And I look upon Ben Lawers, where the after glory glows, And I think on two bright eyes, And the melting mouth below. She's my beauteous nighean ruadh, She's my joy and sorrow too. And although she is untrue, Well I cannot live without her, For my heart's a boat in tow, And I'd give the world to know Why she means to let me to, As I sing horee, horo.
2. Nighean ruadh your lovely hair, Has more glamour I declare Than all the tresses rare, `Tween Killin and Aberfeldy. Be they lint white, brown or gold, Be they blacker than the sloe, They are worth no more to me, Than the melting flake o' snow. Her eyes are like the gleam, O' the sunlight on the stream, And the song the fairies sing, Seems like songs she sings at milking But my heart is full of woe, For last night she bade me go and the tears begin to flow, As I sing ho-ree, ho-ro.

  • I love this song, my dad sings it too :') btw...that's my granny in the picture!!

  • @skullfokker I think the best version I have heard is Silly Wizard's. Musically The Corries version is played with a simpler chord pattern and is not therefore as poignant. I can't find Silly Wizard's version here but if you listen to the cd "Kiss the Tears Away" you will get it.

and I think of the fact that my parents introduced me to the Clancy Brothers and that I saw Liam and his son in Newport, RI

I also love the song, especially by Andy M. Stewart and Silly Wizard

  • At least I'm not weeping for Johnny Cunningham now; I met him in New Bedford, MA. Just a few months later, he died.

  • @rossmcl177 sorry but the corries version beats them all a true classic version

  • Until you hear Alex Beaton do this song you haven't heard it sung. A true ballad that is dark and beautiful at the same time.

  • The Corries version is very good, but maybe this just pips it. But what a beautiful song. Close your eyes as you listen to it and you can actually see the man rowing his boat in time to the music.
