Sammy showed off a final version of the sequel to the Zaxxon-like arcade shooter Viewpoint at the Nintendo Spaceworld. This time around, the game presents itself in fully polygonal form with not one, but several different viewpoints. At first, players may be controlling the ship from an isometric perspective like in the original, but the game never sticks with one camera angle for too long and soon switches to an overhead or a behind-the-ship perspective.

Both graphically and gameplay-wise, Viewpoint 2064 owes a lot to Star Fox 64. Luckily, it's not just a shoddy rip-off. The game plays like a mixture between Star Fox and the original Viewpoint, the polygonal graphics are clear and smooth, with some distant fogging to keep the framerate up. As a matter of fact, if it wasn't for the Viewpoint ship, we'd swear Slippy the Toad was going to fly into our laser fire shouting "Help me!" any time during the game's planetary missions. Although Viewpoint 2064's weapons are pretty much standard fare, Sammy did come up with a cool lock-on system that displays a vector-based graphical interface when targeting enemy ships. Of course, the laser firing drone fighters that accompany your ship are also here, as is the Viewpoint-typical "insect" theme.

Viewpoint 2064 is at its most impressive during the boss battles. The game's host of mechanical creatures, such as a giant robot moth is impressively rendered, with huge and fairly detailed ship models that relentlessly bombard the player with lasers and missiles.

  • Game looked great. It looks like StarFox but more shmupish.

  • Making Viewpoint go in the direction of Star Fox makes it lose some of the magic of Viewpoint to me.

  • Check out this video: v=dWYNUDAM_xc @1.15

  • are there any roms

  • imagine stage 1 music from the original and put it into the 64 version... that would be a total awesomeness!

  • do a barrel roll.... phew

  • Good, but why the hell was it unreleased?

  • As long as it was rock-hard like the original, it might have been worth a look.

  • Fuck, why did so many amazing looking 64 games have to be canceled...

  • @vikingboat dude. i owned star fox on the SNES. it definitely came out.

  • I would have bought this game.....even if it is similar to Starfox....except that you don't have to hear that annoying Slippy character complain throughout the entire game.

  • jeezs....

this might have been one the best kick @ss N64 games...

alongside a games library consisting mostly of dull 3d games... ;(
