* This short clip demonstrates why you always bring protection for yourself in the Alaskan Wild. Always stay 300 yards from any bear, farther if it has a cub or cubs. If an encounter happens unexpectedly ( dense brush, campsite etc. ) there is specialized behavioral training administered by your friendly, neighborhood Park Service, but in the end, when push comes to maul, a Big firearm or a jet- pack are about your only options.

Denali National Park Alaska, Summer 2005. Hiked from Sable Pass drop-off, Mile 40 to the Teklanika headwaters 13 miles from Park road. On day two of this solo trip, (dayhiking towards the glacier) I spotted a grizzly cub chasing an adult carribou 100 yds UPWIND. Up until then, bears were almost the only Denali animal I hadn't captured to my satisfaction.

The original (single) clip has a duration of almost 30 minutes and includes four subsequent "un-aired" charges. It was hard to be sure of the cubs intention's, looking so adorable . . . but with no spray or weapon other than my tripod, I was at the Sow's absolute mercy.

The winds also played into it, from the defocation sniff, to the 10 ft close call's. Once downwind, with their highly developed sense of smell, you can see the bears reacting to my very foreign scent.

Any/and every time I attempted to *slowly move away . . . full charge, and following mother. Once I felt like I was saf(er) I realized I was committed, and trapped as long as they stayed on the river bed.
What I like most about this video is not the sound of my own voice ( don't care much for it ), but the fact that the viewer see's the action as I saw it for the first time . . . and uncut.

WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY

  • You should be making a metric shit ton of noise in this situation. Stand up, make noise, and don't back down.

But, hey, we all learn these things eventually. I've had some run-ins with BC Grizzlies and in retrospect had the thought "Jesus, I almost got myself killed!"

  • @jthor Good that you've learned your lesson. Going unarmed in my home state is like a death sentence.
