Oowatanite by April Wine ~ and the NHL (Canada)

A song from a Live concert in 2003 - first came out in 1975 on the band's 'Stand Back' album - which went double platinum (the song sounds better on the studio recording I think... but this 'live' version goes well with the hockey theme in my opinion).

'Oowatanite' is one of many songs that are played during NHL games.. the reason I chose it. (And the 'Hey' song by Gary Glitter is often played when a goal is scored as a crowd pleaser!)

Ice hockey is a favoured sport in Canada; and the 'National Hockey League' originated in Canada.

NHL: Founded in Montreal Quebec Canada in 1917 (preceded by the National Hockey Association - which was founded in 1907 - hence, the NHL dates back to 1907 when it was the NHA), and is now headquartered in New York City United States. The league is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world.

Although this all began in Canada, there are only 6 Canadian teams that compete along with 24 American teams - 30 teams in all. The expansion undoubtedly relates to the difference in major cities and population between the two countries. Additionally, there are many recruits from outside both countries, often from Europe. Recruited NHL players come from countries that include Russia, the Czech Republic, and Sweden (some very outstanding players!). In all, NHL players currently are from 18 different countries. Yet 52% of the entire league's players (08/09) come from Canada.

The 6 Canadian teams are highlighted on this video. 3 teams are from the west, and 3 teams are from the east . They are the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Montreal Canadiens.

('Canadiens' is not misspelled. The spelling is due to the bilingual French/English province of Canada.)

(The sport of hockey in Canada goes back further.. to 1800's. The dates here are from the founding of the league that we know today.)

Hope you enjoy this!!
