SUTTON HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYS AIR RAID SHELTER

a video of the air raid shelter at Sutton High School for Boys, Plymouth. This was under the west playground area. Video shows graffiti of Hitler, Goring, Churchill & Mussolini. Also sketches of battleships, planes, aerial dog fights, Heinkels, V ...- signs, "den den den da" or "dot dot dash" in morse, pilots bailing out on parachutes with speech balloons saying "help" - barrage balloons. Then there are words "they are in love" "kiss me darling" "victory, we will win" "Plymouth warship week" "bride of the NAAFI." a sketch of a raiding eagle, remains of toys, sandbags, anti-gas curtains, paper posters commanding "no smoking, no dogs" there was fear that the noise and stress of a raid could drive the dogs mad & they would attack someone. The older gentleman is Gordon Batten of Plymouth, who attended this school in the war when it was "the Emergency High School." Sadly he has since passed away, video being shot around 1993. In true Plymouth style this shelter and its imagery have all been destroyed. Finally there are some images from a large shelter under the garden of a large private house in Plymouth

There was, but it closed down in 1984. I was one of the last. I didn't know there was ever a Sutton for girls, though :)

OMG I was a student in Plymouth university, and now this building is accomodation. I used to live there, oh my, i didnt know about that.

OH mY God! Damn them destroying it now. I've just moved into an apartment in this exact school and I got all excited about trying to find it, but now I know it' sbeen destroyed that sucks, it would have been such an awesome hang out! Or even, just an awesome thing to see, I love historical stuff like this, I can't believe they destroyed it, it's such an emblam of war time life and views, urgh, that's annoying!
