When kids are diagnosed with cancer, they miss out a lot of their childhood. Three teen cancer survivors who were treated at The Nebraska Medical Center are catching up with a unique sightseeing trip to the nation's capital. The trip was arranged through the Sunshine Kids Foundation, a national charity that supports children fighting cancer.
One of the young travelers, 14 year old Megan received her "all clear" less than a week before the trip. She spent six months fighting Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The treatment involved several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. It also meant traveling to Omaha from her home in Kansas and missing school and time with friends.
She and the other two patients, Katie and Derek are accompanied by Mark Schulte, an oncology nurse who helped care for them while they were in the hospital.
