Goddess Durga is the goddess of power. When all the gods failed to kill the mighty demon Mahishasura, they united all their powers and created a goddess and endowed her with all their weapons. With ten weapons in ten hands goddess Durga fought and killed Mahishasura.
Durga Stuti is a hymn describing the goddess. The dancer bows to goddess Durga whose matted hair is adorned by the half moon. Her face is as bright as the full moon and she has three beautiful eyes (one on the forehead). The colour of her skin is as bright that of the Atasi flower , she has beautiful teeth and beautiful breasts. She stands in the tribhanga posture and has ten hands. In her ten hands she holds ten weapons. In her right hands she holds the Trishula (spear), the Kharga (salchion), the Chakra (wheel), the Vana (arrow) and the Shakti (club). In her left hands she holds the Khetaka (shield), the Chapa (bow), the Pasha (lasso), the Ankusha and the Ghanta (bell) or the Parashu (axe). With these ten weapons she fights and kills the demon Mahishasura.

  • gr888 dance nandini.....mesmerising.....but there is sumthng i need to clarify....i had heard tat odissi is a deliber8 dance form....but i suppose this was quite fast paced ....much like bharatnatyam....frankly am qite naive about it....cud u throw sum light upon it

  • I don't quite understand what you mean by 'deliber8 danceform' . Odissi is both - at times slow and graceful and at times very fast. Often, the variations in speed and rhythm are juxtaposed with each other. In this item though there are two distinct parts- the slower first part describes the beauty of Goddess Durga and the latter, faster part describes the ten weapons with which she fights Mahishasura.

  • Was it malicicous or whatever... why that is not at all where i was targeting...It is also UTTERLY my opinion that i feel Nandini has done absolute justice to this Durga stuti then Debamitra . I know few who performs this items magnificiently and few who dosen't at all .Thats my choice of thinking ok. Its all there in the ytube to see and learn .

  • Please comment on MY dance only in my Comments Page. I personally think Debamitra is a graceful dancer.
