Lethbridge Grass Fire - Nov 27th 2011

At about 4:15 PM on Sunday we noticed a large cloud out our front window.The winds in Southern Alberta were gusting up to 144km/h (90MPH) that day so we weren't sure if it was a cloud of smoke or dust, so we went on a little drive to go check it out. We discovered that the huge cloud of smoke was from an out of control grass fire that had caught on the Blood Indian Reserve and crossed the river at about 3:30PM. Over a hundred people were evacuated from their homes in the more rural areas, and some urban areas were put on standby for an emergency evacuation. Fortunately emergency crews got the fire in West Lethbridge under control around 8:00PM.

@spartindx it was started by sparks from a sweat hut fire on the indian reserve. The winds were gusting up to 140km/h that day so as soon as the sparks ignited the grass it flared up and burnt out of control.

Imfrom the blood reserve, I was told that they were having sweat, and the fire got out of the area and spreaded all that way.

Im from Slave Lake, a first year at the UofL, and my mouth dropped when our R.A told us to be prepared to be on evacuation notice. Im glad this didnt cause the whole city to evacuate, it is not a fun experience to be homeless for 12 days with the uncertainty of ever going back to a house.

Haha, yea at 5:14 you show my place :P the big orange sea container is in there , but just a glimpse. i saw the fire a three , thought the smoke was a huge dust cloud then turn black quickly and saw flames. Nice video !
