Google "Wolfgang Köhler's chimps" to see that our closest relatives in the animal kingdom (almost...they're not actually Bonobo chimps, but the point stands) can reason and have moments of enlightenment and insight.
I suppose you can use this same sort of way of assertaining to how far down the time line do you have to go to realise what is ape, caveman or modern man. Or when a fish starts evolving to become a frog (fins become modified legs to stand on), how far would you classify the animal as frog or fish.
