Old footage of a model of the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin parasite fighter jet powered by a glow ducted fan. As the video explains, on the first test 'hop' the model was massively tail-heavy resulting in the flat plop. The pilot adjusted the CG and tried again.

  • @RobSar63 I've never read anything that indicates the aircraft itself was hard to control. Only that the turbulence under the carrier ship made the job of reengaging dangerous.

  • Actually the files on the Goblin, stated that the test program proved that it was very difficult to control. The test pilot almost lost his life hooking back on during the test.

  • A bit more cheering might help...??!!! Ha!! Cool test flight.... interesting subject!

  • judging by the long takeoff and slow acceleration it appears to be underpowered

  • Gravity Wins!

  • @77barrj yeah, it was meant to be a fighter escort for bombers, back when fighter aircraft range was very limited, but bombers' range wasn't. it was meant to hook onto the belly of said bomber via a trapeze like device as a"parasite" fighter.

  • @77barrj a concept fighter jet in the '50s lol

  • This thing looking incontrolable...but the real Gobling was stable and fly good, but he's performance was not so good as a standard aircraft, only the recovery manoeuver was very difficult because the turbulences from the bomber.

With the Curtiss biplanes on the airships Macon and Akron, the reconvery manoeuver was in comparision relative easy...

  • @77barrj XF-85 Goblin which was designed to drop out of the bombay of large bombers to deal off attackers which was very unsucessful. And probally the most demented jet in the world

  • GET OFF THE RUNWAY! GET OFF THE RUNWAY!
