"Este lugar aparece documentado durante el reinado de Alfonso VIII, siglo XII, como ´castellum de Tremaia´. Su nombre debe derivarse del latín "tremeré", temblar y debe tener relación con el término del castellano antiguo tremedal, lugar movible por ser húmedo, por tener gravilla, etc. El significado sería, entonces, "lugar tembloroso o movible".
