The famous sun temple of Konark in Orissa seems to be in danger. A little rain makes the architectural edifice surrounded by water. Like last year, this year also the monument has gone into water after the first rains at the coastal town.
After reports of dislocation of some stone blocks, water-logging at the famous Sun Temple in Konark has now raised serious questions on the preservation of the world heritage site.
Tourists use to wade through knee-deep water which had accumulated around the 13th century monument following the low pressure rain since last two days.
'This is a world heritage monument and people from all over the world are coming to the place to see the monument and the art on it. ASI is collecting fees from crores of visitors coming to the complex every day. But, it is really sad to see that there is nothing for the tourists. Female tourists are facing lots of troubles because no bathroom is there nearby. A little rain is putting the huge monumental edifice inside water. No proper drainage system, nothing. Where the money collected from tourists go?' said a female tourist who had to see the monument standing inside the knee-level water logged in the complex.
The Sun Temple, also known as the Black Pagoda now cries for attention as no step so far has been taken to improve the existing drainage system at the historic site.
And, the Archaeological Survey of India has nothing to say about it. In fact, ASI is just avoiding talking about it.
It can be recalled that the Sun Temple was water-logged for few days causing lots of hardship to the tourists last year. 'This is nothing but sheer negligence by ASI and, also, the state government that earn revenue from tourism. The government must know that Sun Temple attracts huge number of tourists into the state', said another tourist.
The monument with extra ordinary stone carving and sculptures in it, Sun Temple campus now looks like a water sporting complex. Further negligence to the monument would just spoil the architectural edifice for which Orissa and the ASI is now proud of. However, after the news came in TV channels, blogs and Newspapers, ASI now shows itself a little concerned about the world heritage monument.
