Actually this is recent, They have already spoken to Micheal Keaton an he said he would is willing an would love to play the character again. Tim Burton has also said he would love to do a sequel with the right story.
Right now, A writer is doing something for Tim Burton but say's that hopefully after he finishes that he will start a script for a sequel to Beetlejuice.

You mean they planned on doing a sequel about two decades ago. They had a choice of either a Beetlejuice sequel, or a Batman sequel. Keaton was fine with doing whatever Burton chose, but Burton went for the money and we got Batman Returns.

It really shows how charismatic and talented an actor is when they can hold the audience's attention despite only having a total screen time of 17 minutes. Keaton is terribly underrated and deserves more star billing.
