Hi! This is my second "enlightening" video on Russian&Soviet culture. This time I cover our most traditional sweets, which we enjoyed before the Iron Curtain fell and Snickers and M&M's came and spoiled us ;)

Look at the Russian alphabet somewhere. You maybe find quite a few letters that are familiar to you. Look at Armenian, Georgian, Korean, Devanagari (Indian), Arabic, Mongolian alphabets in Wikipedia and try to discern the meaning of any. And these are just alphabets, we are not talking about other writing systems, like the one they have in China. So the goal is not insurmountable.

@FluffyPuff16 It's just because I like the language, plus it happens to be very useful these days ;) In fact I'm studying Spanish now, since I'm in Bolivia and came here knowing only how to say "Hasta la vista, baby!" :) I will not venture any tonal language though, i feel I'm way too old for that :D

@513755 I suspect they do...also, im sure some items are getting smaller!. Btw your English is pretty much perfect for a Russian speaker were did you learn?

@MrEvilronald I have an idea of making the following study: copy ingredients and nutritional facts from popular products prior their acquisition by big transnational companies and see how the change the formula once the reins are in their hands. I have a gut feeling that they do change it, using cheaper equivalents to drive down the cost of production and skimming fat margins in the process....hapless us barely noticing we've been dumbfounded for the umpteenth time :(

Our 'snickers' was called a 'marathon'...then it was replaced with the US version. We also had 'opel fruits'...they were replaced by the US 'starburst'. Both items are the same as the other, but at some point the companys that make them decided to use the US names. Most sweets from my childhood don't even exist now...or not with the name they had anyway. Soviet Union or UK...no one escaped the long arm of Ronald Mcdonald. xD
