Fernwärme Wien burns the trash of the city of Vienna, heats water by doing so, and the super heated water is pumped in large tubes some 1000km long to offices and residential buildings for heating purposes. A typical thermal waste treatment plant, yes, but from the outside it is a work of art, designed by late famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. He loved to integrate the concept of permaculture into architecture and always added some gold to his designs. This is how industrial sites can look like. Official sites: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundertwasser and http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BCllverbrennungsanlage_Spittelau and http://www.wienenergie.at/we/ep/channelView.do/channelId/-28148/pageTypeId/19118.
