Beirut, Lebanon (CNN) -- An Ethiopian airliner with 90 people aboard crashed into the Mediterranean Sea minutes after takeoff from Lebanon early Monday, authorities said.

The Lebanese army and the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon were scouring the area off the Lebanese coast where the Boeing aircraft was thought to have gone down.

Rescue crews had not found the wreckage, said Ghazi El Aridi, Lebanon's minister of public works and transportation.

The Ethiopian Airlines flight left Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut at 2:27 a.m. and was headed to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

It disappeared from radar a few minutes after takeoff, El Aridi said.

The Boeing 737-800 had 83 passengers: 54 Lebanese nationals, 22 Ethiopians, two British-Lebanese, an Iraqi, a Syrian, a Lebanese-Canadian, a Russian-Lebanese and a person from France, the minister said.

Among them was the wife of the French ambassador to Lebanon, said Anne Charlotte of the French embassy.

The plane also had seven crew members.

Authorities did not immediately know the cause of the crash.

The plane crashed about 3.5 km (2.1 miles) west of the town of Na'ameh. Naa'meh is 15 km (9 miles) south of Beirut.

Un avion d'Ethiopian Airlines s'est abîmé en mer Méditerranée dans la nuit de dimanche à lundi 25 janvier, peu après son décollage de l'aéroport de Beyrouth. Parmi les 90 passagers de l'avion se trouvait l'épouse de l'ambassadeur de France au Liban, selon un responsable du gouvernement libanais.

Selon les documents de vol, l'avion comptait 90 personnes (82 passagers et huit membres d'équipage), se trouvent à bord du vol 409 dEthiopian Airlines. Une chaîne de télévision libanaise locale avait précédemment fait état de 59 personnes à bord.

Le vol 409 dEthiopian Airlines a décollé à 02h10 (00h10 Temps universel) de laéroport de Beyrouth à destination d'Addis-Abeba. L'appareil, un Boeing 737-800, a disparu des écrans radar environ cinq minutes après son départ. Selon les premiers témoignages, « une boule de feu » a été aperçue au moment du crash au large du village de Na'ameh, situé à quelques kilomèttres au sud de Beyrouth.

Les opérations de recherches sont en cours, mais de très violents orages frappent la ville depuis hier soir, ce qui ne facilite pas le travail des secouristes.

Il est trop tôt pour déterminer la cause de l'accident. Le ministre libanais des Transports a annoncé l'ouverture d'une enquête. Ghazi Aridi a déclaré que l'appareil transportait 54 Libanais, 22 Ethiopiens, deux Libano-Britanniques, un Libano-Canadien, un Libano-Russe, une Française, un Irakien et un Syrien. L'épouse de l'ambassadeur de France au Liban était à bord de l'appareil, selon un responsable du gouvernement libanais.

Dès l'annonce de la disparition de l'avion, des sauveteurs se sont précipités sur les lieux du crash pour tenter de retrouver des survivants. Larmée libanaise a dépéché sur place ses vedettes de sauvetages et demandé laide des navires de la Finul, la Force de maintien de la paix de lONU.

Plusieurs hauts responsables libanais et des proches de passagers se sont rendus à l'aéroport international Rafic Hariri.
